NEW vs SAME OLD

The shiny new thing versus the old reliable one

The trend today is “new.” New ideas, new offerings, new places, new clothes, and just new. It used to be the reliable, dependable, comfortable, and just same old was what we all wanted. Not so any more.

Restaurants have to have a new twist and they are the “in” place for a while. It is hard to keep up “new” and never-been-done-before with every food styling and constantly change it to be unexpected. The same goes for beer, cocktails, desserts, candies, and so on. It gets you on TV or in the paper but after that there is the next “new” place. You are now old.

The clothes scene has been rolling out new things every season so they are used to “new.” Now “new” has to be even more outrageous and frankly, un-wearable.

“New” gifts and toys are the rage of the holiday season – the must have item. But when January comes the item crashes and burns and is on the clearance table. No one wants it then.

So the question is – is “new” a symptom of our “new” society? Do we have the attention span for something for a nano second and then we move on? Do we need to be constantly stimulated? I must confess, I like “new” but I also like an old dependable to count on.
