No Jury Duty So We Took A Roadtrip to Buckhorn Tavern
Jury Duty IV & A Sad Road Trip
I did not get called for jury duty on Monday. So, we thought a road trip was in order to have lunch at the Buckhorn Tavern one last time; it is set to close forever on Wednesday. The Buckhorn is in San Antonio, New Mexico, across the street from the Owl Café. How can two great eateries be in tiny San Antonio (south of Socorro)?
We have had many great meals at the Buckhorn. Most on our way to events in Ruidoso. Bobby Olguin (owner of the Buckhorn) beat Bobby Flay in a Throwndown for Green Chile Cheeseburger. It also made the list of great burgers in GQ, Albuquerque Journal, El Paso Times, and many others. Bobby was even the Grand Marshall at the State Fair Parade.
We got to the Buckhorn just after it opened at 11 am. There was already a line. We waited in line about 30 minutes because the first rush filled all the tables. It is a small place! We were seated and waited another 45 minutes for food because they were slammed but our order was taken immediately and we had sodas.
The Green Chile Cheeseburgers were as good as before. Everyone was upbeat, friendly, but sad that a chapter had almost ended. There was talk that they might run out of food! Bobby visited every table and was also sad but happy. There were young and senior customers. There were cowboys (you can tell they wear cowboy hats), bikers, a Porsche car club, and just residents. That should tell you of the appeal of the Buckhorn.
When we left there was a bigger line because everyone wanted to say goodbye. Goodbye Buckhorn Tavern. We loved your food and atmosphere! Truly New Mexican.
