A New Balloon Book

AIBF-Arcadia034

I talk about having all of the balloon books you can in your library. There is a new book out and our friend, Tom McConnell gave me a copy just in time for Fiesta. It is called: Images of Modern American, Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta by Tom, Dick Brown, John Davis, Charlotte Kinney, Dick Rice, John Sena, Kim Vesely, and with cooperation of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Heritage Committee. The book is by Arcadia Publishing.

I do like Arcadia because they document all of the special interest topics and places in the United States. Without their books a lot of our history would be lost. Having a little inside information, I know that Arcadia first approached AIBF about doing a book years ago and wanted to do it all black & white. That just wouldn’t work for one of the most colorful events known. So it took a while and it does add cost to the book, but it is now in color.

Each year, AIBF has official photographers take thousands of photos of the event and except for a few photos, the public really doesn’t see them. So this is a good chance.

Tom, Dick Brown and Kim were part of the gang of four with Paul Rhetts, who put together and wrote The World Comes to Albuquerque for the 40th anniversary of Fiesta. That book, in my mind is still the greatest book. But it has sold out.

So before you go to Fiesta READ UP! These also make great gifts. You can never have too many balloon books!

Steve Stucker is to Ballooning Like Air is to Breathing

BalloonBucket-Cover-sm Balloon-96

Steve Stucker and his funny hat and coat with tons of pins, is a part of Balloon Fiesta. Steve is a valuable part of the community and supports Vets, pets, food, festivals, and motorcycles. He is good people.

It is my hope that when Steve retires that he still be brought back to do Fiesta for KOB TV 4. Hell, Fiesta ought to hire him as good pr! We all love Steve and thank him for all he does. There is method in his madness.

Attend the Albuquerque Aloft!

BalloonBucket-Cover-sm HotAirBalloon-p86

I say attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in a week because the kick-off event is Albuquerque Aloft next Friday, weather permitting. It is a great chance to get up close to the balloons, crew, and the pilot. It is also a chance to see kids learning about ballooning.

Go to the AIBF website to find out more about Balloons Aloft.

Ballooning Season

BalloonBucket-Cover-sm 9781936744343.txt.pdf

It is Ballooning Season! Fall will be here tomorrow and balloons are up. In Albuquerque, you see balloons in the morning sky every day. They are getting ready for Balloon Fiesta.

The tents on the Balloon Field are going up. Businesses have special Fiesta signs, RVs are starting to arrive, and the big volunteer cleanup of the Balloon Field is happening this Saturday. The town is getting ready for the 750,000+ tourists to arrive.

Little more than a week until ballooning things start happening!

Pat Hodapp at the SF Women’s Club

SantaFeBucketList-cover-sm SFBucket-p13

Pat Hodapp killed them at the Santa Fe Women’s Club. What a surprise! She knows so much about Santa Fe and is so personable. We were happy to have a special for the Club – a discount for the women who bought a book and $2 for each title bought for the Santa Fe Library. The Women’s Club (now 125 years young) started the Library as their project so they have a place in their hearts for the Library.

The word is, they are having a holiday event December 10 and besides visiting some great homes they are going to have refreshments and booths at the Club. Nice! Festive! And they want us back!

If you get a chance, see the Club building off Old Pecos Trail. It is a keeper and we almost lost it a few years back. It has so much history. Also their Flea Market is coming up in October – don’t miss it!

It is starting to get cool!

CowboyBucketList-cover-sm CowboyBucketp115

The weather is starting to turn fall-like. That means the temperature is getting cooler at night and perfect weather to watch a good cowboy movie. We have some great movies listed in the Cowboy Bucket List book courtesy of Ol’ Don Bullis.

They keep making cowboy movies in hopes there will be a revival. Frankly, there are very few movies likes the old movies. Check them out!

The Contravusy

BalloonBucket-Cover-sm InDesign

Sandia Pueblo and Balloon Fiesta went at it again. Sandia didn’t want any balloons to land or fly over. For about a week they couldn’t agree and then people start to talk boycott. Talk about bad blood!

Sandia has one of the best views of the Balloon Field ever. People said boycott the casino, Bien Mur, eateries, and hotel. All make good money during Fiesta.

The new agreement is balloons can land on Pueblo land but have to call first to pick up the balloon. That is what has happened. Trust me, my balloon landed on Pueblo land and it was all day getting it back. We had to be escorted to go get it.

Also, balloons can not fly over Pueblo land lower than 200 feet. Who is measuring?

This is childish. Call-in shows had people saying that this is how they stick it to Anglos. Balloon crews rip up Pueblo land. Sandia makes great money during Fiesta because of Fiesta. Balloon Fiesta balloons need Sandia Pueblo in case they have to land. Get over it. For 11 days a year you can both cooperate. Jeez!!!

Green Chile Cheeseburgers at EXPO

SecondStreetBrewery (1 of 1)

The Annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge was held Monday at the New Mexico State Fair/EXPO. Ten eateries entered versus the seven I had to judge in Santa Fe. I bet the judges were full!

The eateries were:
Fuddruckers (winner the past two years)
Big Mike’s Grill in Belen
Sparky’s in Hatch
Sadie’s in Albuquerque, Los Ranchos, & Bernalillo
The Eklund in Clayton
Stuart Brothers Brewing in Albuquerque
Laguna Burger in Laguna
Los Chavez Café’s HUB City Grill in Belen
Pasion Latin Fusion in Albuquerque
El Bruno’s in Albuquerque & Cuba

The winners are: Laguna Burger -1st place and Stuart Brothers Brewing -2nd place. The People’s Choice Awards is Sparky’s.

But the real winner is you if you can sample some of the burgers – they are all good.

National Chocolate Milkshake Day & Space

GreenChileBucketList-cover-sm SpaceBucketList-cover-sm

I LOVE milkshakes and the best is chocolate. What goes better with Green Chile Cheeseburgers? Usually the places that have a great GCC also have a good milkshake. The Today Show had a chocolate milkshake tasting and McDonald’s came out first.

We will let you know the results of the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge at Expo today. The last two year’s of the Challenge, Fuddruckers has won.

I will be the first to toast Loretta Hall who just won the 2016 Communicator of Achievement from National Press Women at the national convention. I may be prejudiced but it couldn’t happen to a nicer and more deserving person.

As the author of the Space Buff’s Bucket List book we joke and call her spacey. Now we will call her super space woman! Congrats!

We Remember & More Smackdown

flag-day

First, and most importantly, we need to keep remembering 9/11. So many people did not get a chance to do their bucket lists. Maybe that is why bucket lists are so important. You never know when you will run out of time.

To do something lighter – more pictures of the Edible Smackdown.

Edible Magazine Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown

This is a major event for an author of a Green Chile Bucket List book. I love Edible Magazine and pick up a copy whenever a new one comes out. I have to fully disclose, I wrote an article for Edible Magazine many years ago and they furnished a number of great pictures for my book from previous Smackdowns.

This was not my first rodeo judging food. I did the Scovie Awards for a few years and judged the Matanza in Belen with mud up to my knees. You have to suffer for your art! My fellow judges were: Cheryl Alters Jamison – food icon & author in Santa Fe; Angela Moore from The Food Network (I watch daily!); Arthur Bovino editor & photographer for Mouth.com; and Tracey Ryder co-founder of Edible Communities. All were serious about GCC. We were waited on by Stephanie Cameron - Publisher of Edible Santa Fe.

To be very honest, almost every eatery in New Mexico has a good or great Green Chile Cheeseburger. If it were bad, they would be lynched. But the Smackdown brings a few really great GCCs to the front to be judged and sampled. I have to be frank; the simple Green Chile Cheeseburgers are the best. Some of the ones I tasted had an egg on top, too many toppings, and one burger was almost raw! Presentation is important because we eat with our eyes.

The winners, I think, were Milton Villarrubia, Second Street Brewery – The People’s Choice Award and Anthony Smith, Living Room at Inn and Spa Loretto – The Judges Award. I say, I think, because it was very loud when the results were read – screaming and clapping. I apologize if I have misspoken. Go to Edible Smackdown for the results on Monday. I tried to get it right!

The Smackdown was a good experience and a lot of fun. I am so glad I came! A great event for a foodie.

Green Chile Cheeseburger Judging in Santa Fe

Talk about exciting! Today I am judging the Best Green Chile Cheeseburger at the Edible Smackdown in the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market.

I got new cheeseburger tennis shoes at Walmart. I have a cheeseburger shirt I never wore. Today the occasion screams for that shirt! New Mexico earrings finish the look.

I am also giving a signed Green Chile Cheeseburger Bucket List book to fellow judges. I am ready. Pictures will be on Saturday’s blog.

We are talking major good eats!

Get Discovered

There are many film and TV projects shooting in New Mexico right now. Granite Mountain was filming in Santa Fe – it might still be. Every week new projects are announced. Go online to see who is here.

In addition, you might see a big-name star just walking around. I ran into Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul) coming out of Bookworks in Albuquerque. I figured he could read so I gave him the New Mexico and Balloon Bucket List books. He couldn’t have been nicer!

I have also run into, Ali MacGraw, Marilyn Mason, and a lot of local TV folks.

Today Show’s Bucket List Granted

Bucket Lists are HUGE right now. The Today Show’s Hoda Kotb is doing a week-long series of granted bucket list items. The first one was driving a monster truck.

We wanted to highlight the person who has a specific bucket list – cowboys, space, Santa Fe, eating green chile cheeseburgers, and even Kicking the Bucket List. Anyone can do bucket lists that are generic – we are very specific!

Congrats to the Cumbres & Toltec RR

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the winner in the USA Today Reader’s Choice Award for best railroad in the United States. Well deserved.

I recently went on the railroad – the lunch trip for a half-day. I got on train in Chama, New Mexico, and saw the beautiful scenery in Northern New Mexico and had a great lunch. It rained on and off but that didn’t matter.

Trains are a throwback to a time when travel wasn’t as hectic. Travel was more than getting to a place fast. It was enjoyment, seeing new places, interacting with people, and just having a good time.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is just one of the gems of New Mexico.

Balloon Fiesta – Less Than A Month Away

If CBS Sunday Morning has a feature on the Balloon Fiesta – then it is not too soon to talk about it! Less than a month!

It is on many people’s bucket list because ballooning is so beautiful and a totally different experience. To go up in a balloon is the one thing we will get to flying.

But remember, the sport of hot air ballooning is a sport so it can be dangerous. The Texas crash recently, reminded us of that. Landing can be iffy! Especially when there is wind. Barbed wire fences are not great either!

This photo below is one of my favorites of “Crazy” Bill Douglas. He, along with Frank Bacon, have given me the love of ballooning in Albuquerque.

Getting Ready!

This Labor Day weekend may be the unofficial kick-off of the holiday gift season. Of course there are sales but it also is a clear message how much time you have to make things.

It is also the gear up time for fairs, fiestas, and crafts shows. You can feel the change in the air and I hope it will get cooler. Fall veggies and fruits are starting to come in – there is the aroma of chile roasting in the air.

It is the time to start looking for the hiding places you put those special gifts. Get them found! You may be surprised what you bought many months ago.

Labor Day spells renewal and a new start. It is fun the get school supplies, new fall clothes, and gifts. It is also a time for a new mind-set! Where you are, get a local book to read and give one as a gift. Books last forever. Keep your eye on craft fairs for the perfect, hand-made gift. Buy for a reason not just to spend money.

I can faintly hear those jingle bells! Of course if I go in Costco, Cost Plus, or many other stores, they have already started putting out Christmas decorations. I want it to get cool first! HO HO HO!

Get Ready For World Space Week!

It is a big deal, so we want to make sure you have enough time to plan for World Space Week. Maybe celebrate with a party, stargazing, a trip, or at least go to your planetarium. Can you name all of the planets?

September 19 at the Women’s Club of Santa Fe

Did you know that the Santa Fe Public Library began through the efforts of the Women’s Club of Santa Fe? It stands to reason that Pat Hodapp, Director of the Santa Fe Public Library, will speak at the Women’s Club of Santa Fe on September 19. The lunch meeting starts at noon. Go to the Facebook page of the Women’s Club to find out more. Of course signed books will be available. It is a closed meeting – you can’t walk-in to be a part of the lunch. But maybe a friend is a member and you can come as a guest.
